"Dabbeling must go", that's how physics professor Sebastian understands the demands made by his son's kidnappers. Dabbeling is an anesthesiologist and friends with Sebastian's wife. Shortly after the kidnapper's call he is murdered, and investigating detective Schilf soon settles on Sebastian as the killer. But at the same time Schilf is preoccupied with one of Sebastian's childhood friends, Oskar. During their years at college Oskar and Sebastian were inseparable, then the relationship cooled off. Oskar proved to be the more talented of the two, Sebastian opted for a tenure position and family life and alienated Oskar with his "many worlds theory". Oskar doggedly attempts to guide his old ally back to the path of science, even publicly in a TV debate. This makes Schilf prick up his ears, and he decides to re-enact the murder to provoke a show down ...
