Ruth, born in 1922, Hanna born in 1943, Paula, born in 1980 - three women whose biographies couldn't be more different, and who are simultaneously and inextricably linked. Ruth lives through the horrors of World War II, losing her newborn son Anton during a bomb attack. Her daughter Hannah will later try in vain to break through Ruth’s silence about what happened back then. Her own children Paula and Anton grow up in a considerably more liberal society, which causes new problems because of its demand for global thinking and greater flexibility. Only after Anton's attempt to kill himself and his sister does Hannah realize that Anton and Paula are having an incestuous relationship, almost like an escape route from this highly complex world. Suddenly, the collective speechlessness of the years since 1945 is reflected in the inability of individuals to talk about the here and now, despite the fact that all extraneous conditions are completely different.
