It is the first day of the final written exams in high school. Math. Isa will graduate at the top of her class and be the first in her family to go to college. Sonntag has a record of behavioral issues, but has decided to graduate first and then really start a career. And Henri, son of wealthy parents, will remain mediocre, as always. So far, so predictable. But then there is Falk. The “special kid", as his parents had begun calling him early on; Falk, whose third-grade math scores had almost made his mother sue the school; Falk, the reluctant high-schooler, the dropout and dissident, who got this far nevertheless. He is still sitting at his desk, receiving the exam papers. It is a decisive moment for Isa, Henri, and Sonntag: After all, Sonntag had shown Falk in elementary school, what rebellion means. Isa had convinced him to give the system another chance. And Henry had almost joined him when Falk was kicked out of this “extremely beautiful school without grades”. They intently wait what Falk will be doing next. Will he show gratitude for what he has achieved thus far? Or will he hand back the paper with the questions, politely say goodbye and leave? Does somebody like Falk even need a diploma? And what happens, if not?

This is the story of a misfit, as told by three people who decided to play by the rules – Falk is not graduating explores the thin line between conformance and self-determination in an educational system which wants to do justice to all and therefore fits none.
