The bank is bankrupt, the investors are ruined. Even the most levelheaded investors find themselves in the grasp of greed for a quick buck, the entire society stumbles and falls - in France, at the end of the 19th century. " If not for the occasional air of the past , this analysis feels like it was written only yesterday.... Zola wrote his novel in 1891 with the collapse of the Banque l’Union Générale as a back drop. This bank had been created to finance silver mining and the necessary infrastructure in Lebanon. But the original purpose is soon forgotten, the bank becomes an end in itself. The founding trustees buy their own bonds to drive up the prize, they trade in non-existing values, pay with money they don't have, just to eliminate all rivals from the marketplace through a completely abstract scheme. Until finally they themselves are blown away by the storm they stirred up.... the main aspect in John von Düffel’s text is that although history shines through... it still seems to be describing last year's collapse of the financial world. The disaster is inherent to the system. It will always repeat itself.» (Süddeutsche Zeitung)
