A man drives his car into a group of people. The driver and another person die. Was that a tragic accident? An extended suicide? A terror attack by Islamic extremists? Horror and outrage spread quickly, not only in Irbertsheim, the small town where the incident occurred, but across the country in the context of the upcoming elections. Mayor Corinna Schaad is the only person who knows that the culprit is her half-brother. To save her career she has secretly taken his body to the town hall and hidden it in an old wooden cabinet while a remembrance service is being prepared nextdoor. Corinna’s opponent, the right-wing populist Elsa Lerchenberg, will no doubt instrumentalise the incident and talk about “foreign infiltration”. A struggle begins, both hilarious and menacing, in which the living project their fears onto the dead, who serve as weapons in ideological trench warfare...
