Three scenes in a marriage-like relationship whose partners are as estranged as only close intimates can be. Part I: Hugo has gone to a design conference but disguises himself at the hotel as a carpet vendor. This is an unnecessary precaution, as everyone seems to mistake him for someone else anyway. Even stranger is that everyone who speaks to him resembles his wife, Marthe. Part II: Marthe is having a similar experience in her hotel room in Nuremberg, where she is visiting her mother. The difference is that she does not need to disguise herself to doubt herself, Hugo, and their existence in her soliloquy. Part III: Together in the safety of their own home, Marthe and Hugo are overtaken by their fantasies, which threaten to become unpleasantly real. Gradually, it dawns on both of them that there is, perhaps, no right way of life in the wrong one.
