Katharina Schmitt

Katharina Schmitt studied theatre directing at the Prague Academy of Performing Arts and works as a director and writer in theatre, opera and radio.

Her latest works as a director and librettist of operas and music theatre include Alles klappt, (2018, composition: Ondřej Adámek, U: Munich Biennale), Das Molyneux Problem (2018, composition: Michal Rataj, radio play ORF/Czech Radio, performances Berlin / Prague), Über Aphasielehre (2020, composition: Michal Rataj, radio play Czech Radio, U: NODO Festival in Ostrava). In 2024, the opera INES, her second collaboration with Ondřej Adámek, will have its world premiere at the Cologne Opera under her direction.

Katharina Schmitt has been awarded the Jakob Michael Reinhold Lenz Prize for Drama, the Martha Saalfeld Literature Prize, the EHF 2010 Fellowship, the Museumsquartier Vienna Studio Stipend and the Alfred Döblin Fellowship of the Academy of Arts Berlin. Her radio plays received nominations for the Prix Europa, the Prix Marulić and for the Grand Prix Nova. Her plays have been translated into various languages. For Rowohlt Theater Verlag she has translated plays by Chris Thorpe and Lucy Kirkwood.
