In America, Mirjam had been warned by her mother: "Germany is beautiful. If it weren't for the Germans.» But Mirjam falls in love with a German of all people, and travels to Berlin to join him. Her train gets stuck near Buchenwald, and she ends up alone in a hotel bar in Weimar. Here she encounters xenophobia, violence, and Nazi ideology. The loudmouth regulars get their kicks out of assaulting a young Polish guy, who subsequently dies. Then they turn on the "beautiful stranger". Unexpectedly, she goes on the offensive, but must find out in the process that they don't care about justice. This also complicates her relationship with her German partner: They cannot see each other as individuals anymore, but as the progeny of a tradition of victims and offenders.
