Max, an unknown, maybe mediocre, but definitely ambitious actor, wants to free theater from " the evils of sick realism". Next to the famous, old and self assured actor Karl Joseph ("I will stay realistic, even if they all fall asleep down there!") he is supposed to portray a professor of genetics, but fails, due to himself and the power of his older colleague. But as soon as the relationships on stage seem to be cleared up, the theater fights back with it's own magical means: "Blind visitors, hiding behind the costumes" slowly fill the space with their surreal stories. Max suddenly finds himself on an old abandoned carnival, where he surprises his lover arm in arm with his understudy. A blind girl restores some order to the out-of-control situation. With a great sense for comedy Strauss demonstrates the new "complexity" (Juergen Habermas) of social conditions and human relationships.
