No other German play has unleashed such global controversy. It tackles the relationship between power and morals and in particular, the question of why Pope Pius XII remained silent about the murder of Jews during the Third Reich. Constantin Costa-Gavras’s film adaptation of the play, Amen, was awarded the French césar 2003 for Best Screenplay as well as the Lumière Award 2003 for Best Film.
