Sissi, Sisi, Elisabeth - dead for over a hundred years, and yet omnipresent, figurehead and fascination, constantly re-examined, re-appreciated and re-interpreted. In Mareike Fallwickl's Elisabeth, the empress turns the tables («eternal peace, my arse») and looks back: at how society moulded a woman, at her own part in it and at how the patterns and structures of this moulding continue to this day («I've learned so much in the meantime»). Elisabeth's furious monologue builds a bridge from the consolidation of the absolutist monarchy through the suppression of the first women's movement to the patriarchal backlash of today. It connects the stroies that were told about Elisabeth to historical and contemporary female figures and lets us experience how history is written - and by whom.
