Abandoned by her lover, the Marquise de Merteuil seeks revenge: She tasks the Vicomte de Valmont with seducing the virgin Cécile de Volanges. But Valmont proposes an even more perfidious counter-agreement to Merteuil: If he succeeds in sexually conquering the extremely virtuous Madame de Tourvel instead, the Marquise must spend a night with him.
John von Duffel's stage adaptation, which focuses Choderlos de Laclos' epistolary novel entirely on the two main characters, vividly shows how a game of love can turn into a cruel war of emotions.
