No Light
(Kein Licht.)
variable casting, min. 3 actors
The water has come on land: A gigantic wave has washed away everything in its path. It took away the energy: One power plant has failed or was automatically shut down. Deafening silence fills the air; it is a noise which silently smothers the earth, deafens every sense of hearing, like some collective tinnitus. Something has changed fundamentally – but what is it? Something which man has built has turned against him, and now he is forced to emit from himself the light which used to shine on him, a bluish glow from the bones in his body … Two musicians (first and second violin), playing on like the band on the sinking Titanic, attempt to fathom the unfathomable in Elfriede Jelinek’s play. Without ever mentioning Fukushima or nuclear power, No Light is a spooky scenario after a major nuclear disaster, a Beckett-style endgame, settling the score with our unconditional belief in controllable technology, and where the screams of victims, who have been shrouded in silence, resonate eerily.
