Suddenly she keeps getting these looks. Not long ago she was still just a kid playing with her friends in the playground and leaping around like a grasshopper. But then she starts getting these pains in her breasts and her stomach. Who she is on the inside no longer matches who she is on the outside, and her body no longer looks the way she feels. But more than anything it’s the looks people give her. Not only her parents and relatives, who see her differently now, who are stricter with her, who tell her she has to grow up now, be strong, that women like her are not allowed to be weak. Even worse is the way men look at her, stare at her, the things they shout at her. Every look, every comment is a burden, until there’s nothing left of her former carefree attitude. How can it be acceptable for the world to oppress a girl in this way? For people who ought to know better to bombard her with looks and words until she can barely move?
Mädchenschrift is a description, (self) exploration and manifesto, a young woman’s revolt against the ascriptions and harassment that limit and suffocate her.
