They come from Morocco, Russia or Columbia, they earn money working as dishwashers or drug dealers, prostitutes or geriatric nurses. No one knows for sure how many illegal immigrants there are in Germany, if you make it here without legal documents, you have learned to become invisible. How does one exist in the shadow of society? Feridun Zaimoglu and Guenther Senkel collected voices of people who officially do not exist, and yet they live in our midst. Full of self confidence and far from any self pity, they give an account of the daily strategies of survival, of hiding out and how it is still possible to remain true to oneself. Conceived as glimpses into the dark world of immigration, the nine monologues shed a light on ways to exist that most of us have never consciously encountered, and at the same time they look back at Germany and the Germans from an unusual perspective.
