It is the morning of Eugene O'Neill's 61st birthday, and his two sons from previous marriages have come to visit the playwright, who has been ravaged by Parkinson's disease and weariness, and his third wife, Carlotta, in their house on the coast of New England. "Gene" and Carlotta have settled into a sado-masochistic relationship. She tries to get to him with verbal hits below the belt, and he rigorously keeps her at a distance. The poet, who can't write anymore, attacks his two unfortunate sons with the vigor that Carlotta is so painfully missing in him...
