teachers' room
(Lehrerzimmer)
When the school bell rings for the big break, the teachers disappear into their mysterious sanctuary. While the students are kindly asked to let off steam and toughen up outside, the doors of the teachers' room close behind their supervisors, allowing them a brief moment to catch their breath. This is their haven, inaccessible to anyone else. Naturally, for generations, students have pondered: what do they do in there? Tonight the truth will come to light: they sing. Of notes and needs. Of dreams and traumas. Where else, if not here, can they be truly human? With genuine emotions? This is where the trainee teacher gives free rein to his despair over class 7b, where coffee (courtesy of Ms Höppe, German, History) and fatherly advice (from Mr Demuth, Religion) are plentiful. Hesse is quoted, zodiac signs and broken relationships are pondered. And perhaps, just perhaps, the tender sprouts of romance may briefly blossom before the school bell mercilessly rings everyone back to reality.
Having once set out with great ideals, now worn down by harsh reality, the teachers just yearn for a moment of peace, to put their cynicism on hold and set their omniscience aside. They aim to survive the day until the evening’s teachers theatre group's performance, when everyone will be singing: “Let the sunshine in”.
