The “territory” is a narrow strip of land on the edge of Europe. A wall that gets higher every year separates the region from the rest of the continent. To the south lies the sea. People used to cross it in boats, fleeing from their homes. Then they were moved to camps up on the plateau, but no one speaks about what happened up there. Suu, whose parents journeyed here and who now lives on the other side of the wall, is sent by her ominous employer into the sealed-off area tasked with assessing the feasibility of building a factory there. The sweltering heat beats down while sand slowly erodes the buildings. Jobs are scarce. And yet Suu is greeted by most of the remaining inhabitants of the zone with malice and resentment. The appearance of this stranger evokes memories of a past which - literally - lies deeply buried and which no one wants to awaken.

last light. Territory marks a new chapter in Thomas Freyer’s ongoing exploration of issues surrounding refugees, asylum and migration. He takes current developments, including political and ecological processes such as climate change, to their terrifyingly logical conclusions, examining them from a post-apocalyptic perspective that retains a fairytale-like quality in its dissection of the struggles and conflicts that will confront Europe in the near future.
