Michel Decar

Michel Decar, born in Augsburg in 1987, studied German Studies and History at Ludwig-Maximilians-University Munich, where he also directed his first plays on the studio stage, and then Scenic Writing at the Universität der Künste (University of the Arts) in Berlin. Since then, he has been working as an author, director, and filmmaker.
 

Together with Jakob Nolte, he has written plays under the name Nolte Decar, of which he has also directed Das Tierreich – like many of his own plays – as a radio play. In 2020, Deutschlandradio/Deutschlandfunk Kultur also produced his original radio play Die besten Sprüche aller Zeiten.
 

Prose works: Tausend deutsche Diskotheken (novel, 2018, Ullstein Verlag), Die Kobra von Kreuzberg (novel, 2021, Ullstein Verlag), Kapitulation (novel, 2023, MÄRZ Verlag)
 

Films: Europa zum Beispiel (Short film, 2020), in competition at the Max-Ophüls-Preis film festival
 

Prizes and awards:

  • 2012 Förderpreis (Support Prize) of the «Stückemarkt» of Theatertreffen Berlin for Jonas Jagow
  • 2013 Brothers Grimm Award of the Land of Berlin for Das Tierreich (Nolte Decar)
  • 2014 Kleist Förderpreis for his play Jenny Jannowitz
  • 2014 Nomination for the Author's Award at the Stückemarkt Heidelberg for Das Tierreich (Nolte Decar)
  • 2017 Radio Play of the Month (January) for Schere Faust Papier
  • 2019 Bayern2 Wortspiele Award for Tausend deutsche Diskotheken
