Ulrike Syha (born in 1976 in Wiesbaden) studied Dramaturgy in Leipzig and worked as an assistant director. In 2002 she received the renowned Kleist-Förderpreis for young dramatists for her play Autofahren in Deutschland. Her play Nomaden was nominated for the Mülheim Dramatists' Award (2003) as was her play Privatleben (2009). She has received residency grants for the Akademie Schloss Solitude in Stuttgart (2006), the Stiftung Künstlerdorf Schöppingen (2007), the Literarisches Colloquium Berlin (2008), the József Attila Kreis in Budapest (2008) the Casa Baldi in Rome (2008) and the Kuenstlerhaus Lukas in Visby/Sweden (2009). In 2009/10 she was writer-in-residence at Nationaltheater Mannheim. She was awarded the City of Hamburg's scholarship for literature (2010), a writer-in-residency in Lithuania (2012), the Robert-Gernhardt-Award in 2014 and the Walter-Serner-Award in 2015. Ulrike Syha has also translated plays by Alan Ayckbourn, Martin Crimp, Wallace Shawn and Davide Enia into German.
